Francis Gilfrid Maughan

Biography

Born in 1878 in Northumberland, he was commissioned in 1897, as a Second Lieutenant, in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion DLI, before he became a Regular and joined 2 DLI in India.

When the Great War began, he joined the 18th Brigade, as a Staff Captain and gained the Distinguished Service Order in 1916. He was severely wounded in September 1916 and, after his recovery, spent the rest of the war with Northern Command HQ in York. He was awarded the French Croix de Guerre in 1918.

He finally retired in 1923 and died in 1938 at Tonbridge.

His two sons, Francis and Gilfred Maughan, both served in the DLI and their medals are also on show in the DLI's Medal Room. Gilfred commanded the 1st Battalion DLI in its last campaign in Borneo in 1966.
